Nicholas Trainor

Nicholas is an alum of the both the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, graduating with a dual BS/MS in 2019. His first research experience was as a STAR Scholar working with Dr. Yury Gogotsi and the Drexel Nanomaterials Institute (DNI) on composites of MXenes and graphene for use in supercapacitors. He returned to DNI for his first co-op, synthesizing various MXenes and studying their use in new applications. His second co-op was with Dr. Goran Karapetrov (Condensed Matter Group), growing and characterizing thin films of titanium diselenide. For his third co-op, he worked with Dr. Vibha Kalra on developing new electrode materials for lithium-sulfur batteries. For his master’s thesis, he studied different possible etching methods to produce Cr2C MXene under the direction of Dr. Gogotsi. Nicholas is currently a PhD student in the Pennsylvania State University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, working in Dr. Joan Redwing’s group studying transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures grown using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition.
